This is why you love your paycheck

...and hesitate to change...

In the Scottish referendum, a majority voted for Scotland to remain a part of the UK instead of an independent country. The closer to polling day, the more polls showing an increased support for a “Yes”. Panic in Westminster with promises of increased autonomy.

On polling day, however, it became clear that 55% of Scots voted to leave it as it "always" has been. Certainly, there were several potential “Yes” voters as the moment of truth approached who decided that "things are pretty much OK after all, and what do we know about what future changes will bring”?

There is no secret that the content in your wallet is often critical, and of course, necessary for several. What will happen with pensions, NHS etc etc? You cannot always vote with your heart but what if things do get better. If it gets the way you want it ...... ?

But then......

I ran into some old friends and former colleagues the other day. "Yes, you may have heard I’m unemployed" I said. Sure they’d heard about it. It is a small country after all…

"How are you? Will you find a new job? You will continue doing what you did?

 Not!?”

Their faces filled with uncertainty and disbelief. The way you look yourself when talking to someone who has lost a relative or - a job.

Eyes widening as I tell them I am doing pretty well and I do not really miss my old job. Well, should be the paycheck then... ;-)

“The situation is not optional, but this is how it is and I see it as a great opportunity as I did not take the step a couple of years ago”, I said

"But you will never get the same pay and security if you do not go back to the same job!"

That’s the thing!

Going back to the same job…... In fact I am considering not going back to the same business again.  What security? There are no permanent jobs today……

I told them about networking and about the interesting people I meet and their eyes grew even bigger. Working outside the world of banking? Completely inconceivable apparently ...

I don't really like my job...!

And my friends? What was it like on their jobs? Not good at all. The boss is stupid, reorganization again, I never get promoted, my colleagues ignore it all, no one appreciates what I do, we have the wrong strategy, etc., etc. "But we have just booked a trip to the Seychelles for Christmas"

"But why not look for something else" I asked, a bit cocky with my new found insights… optimistic about what life can be like outside the workplace nobody likes.

"Yes ...... but the Seychelles….things are pretty much OK after all, and what do we know about what future changes will bring”?

“So you’re not happy with your job despite your fat paycheck. Go for a change! Or do you really love your paycheck that much?”  “Well, yes, it’s the car, the mortgage, the second car, the holiday trip….“.

But now it’s time to grab opportunity! You are so much more than your job titles. Imagine how much you know out of experience which could, but for any strange reason isn’t, used in your present job or could be in the job you really want….

You are in the driver seat...!

What if you use these skills from any of your "boxes" (job box, family box, leader box, etc….) in another of your “boxes”.  It would make a difference. To yourself and others….

But no. Change is difficult, scary. Whether you are a company or employee. To change a business or a career is frightening. But it is also scary to be in a situation where you feel out of control. It's devastating ....... or not…..

Entrepreneurs are inspiring. Passionate about their business or project. Certainly there are non-entrepreneurs being passionate about their current job. Credit to you as well of course!

Make sure you are in the driver's seat when it comes to change. Implementation and acceptance. If you have the opportunity: Imagine not thinking “paycheck” and “Seychelles”. The trip is only two weeks by the way……. The rest of your life is longer ... ..

Time to work on my own projects about Changes to be able to launch it. Otherwise there will be no paycheck in the mailbox ...... But it will be damned fun!

A big journey starts with a small step...

One more thing. As soon as a new idea pops up in your head (when the paycheck is not in the way….) make a note. Soon you'll have a book full of ideas about change and improvement.

Ohhh and one more thing. Someone said that if you read pink business newspapers, you’ll end up with a pink brain…

Next time you walk into your newsagent, buy a couple of magazines about subjects you didn’t even knew existed and read them. New input and new ideas. Who knows…. Maybe that’s what you need. New input. To think differently. To lead and deal with change……
